Take Omega-3 supplements (video)

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means that we have to assimilate it through our diet. Professor Stig Bengmark recommends ingesting Omega-3 through supplements. Watch the video below.

Stig talks about fatty acid Omega-3

Some of the vital substances our body needs it can’t produce itself, for example fatty acid Omega-3. These substances are called essential substances and have to be ingested through our diet.

Both Omega-3 and Omega-6 are essential fatty acids, but our western diet has made the intake of the antiinflammatory omega-6 increase significantly, while intake of the antiinflammatory Omega-3 has decreased. Even though both are important for our body, a quota of about 50:50 between these fatty acids is seen as optimal for our health. There are some studies questioning the importance of the quota between Omega-3 and Omega-6, but there is a consensus about the fact that getting enough of Omega-3 is crucial for our health.

Omega-3 is found in fat fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel. And besides fish there are other foods that contain the fatty acid such as walnuts and linseed oil. Even some algiers is a good source of Omega-3, and that is why there now are supplements containing algiers oil instead of fish oil. Omega-6 is found in sunflower oil, corn oil and sesame seed oil, but since our diet generally is rich with Omega-6 we rarely need supplements for that fatty acid.
